Migrate Windows XP SP3 to Windows 7
This scenario provides steps to migrate files and settings from a computer running Windows
XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 to a new computer running Windows 7
Capture Pre-Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Information
Note: WET only supports the following PC-PC Migration scenarios

Note: WET supports migration from x86 to x86, x86 to x64, and x64 to x64.
However, WET does not support migration to or from ia64

Capture Windows XP Image with Windows Easy Transfer

Close all active programs |
| 2. |
Plug in external USB Hard drive to
System with Windows XP SP3 (to capture the Windows XP system image) |
| 3. |
After installing WET, Click
Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click
System Tools and then click Windows Easy Transfer |
| 4. |
At the "Welcome to Windows
Easy Transfer" screen, click Next |
| 5. |
At the "Choose how to
transfer files and settings to your new computer" screen, select "Use a CD, DVD, or other
removable media" |
| 6. |
At the next "Choose how to
transfer files and program settings" screen, select "External hard disk or to a network
location" or "CD" or "USB flash drive" |

The Browse to Folder
window opens |
| 7. |
At the "Choose network
location" screen input path to USB drive and name the .MIG file, so you can easily find it for restore
or can also use the name displayed by default. DO NOT SET A PASSWORD, click Next

At the "What do you want
to transfer to your new computer" screen, select "All user accounts, files and settings
(Recommended)" |
| 9. |
At the "Review selected
files and settings" screen, click Transfer |
| 10. |
WET will create the migration file
(.MIG) on the USB Drive. (Please wait until the transfer is complete) |
| 11. |
After the image is created you are
now ready for the Windows 7 Clean Install |
| 12. |
Disconnect the USB Drive and
proceed to the Windows 7 Clean Install step |
Clean Install Windows 7
| 1. |
Locate proper Windows 7 install
media |
| |
| a. |
Choose 32-Bit Windows 7 Install if the previous image was 32-Bit
Windows Vista |
| b. |
Choose 64-Bit Windows 7 Install if the previous image was 64-Bit
Windows Vista |
| c. |
Choose the same language for the clean install as the previous
Windows Vista install |

| 2. |
Insert the Windows 7 install media
|
| 3. |
Boot the system from the Windows 7
media |
| 4. |
Select "Install Now"
|
| 5. |
Choose the same SKU
as the previous Windows Vista install |
| 6. |
Accept the License Terms |
| 7. |
Select "Custom Advanced"
|
| 8. |
For each partition, Select
Partition, Select Drive Options, Delete Partition, until only a single Unallocated space exists. Select
Next |
| 9. |
Install will begin |
| |
| a. |
DO NOT remove the install media until the install is complete
|
| b. |
Wait until the entire process takes place |
|
| 10. |
Select "Use recommended
settings" at the "Help protect Windows automatically" screen |
| 11. |
Set the time zone
to the local time zone and verify/set current time |
| 12. |
If "Join Wireless"
screen appears, select skip |
| 13. |
If network attached, Select
"Work" as the computer’s location |
| 14. |
Setup will complete |
| 15. |
Run Windows Update (Note: This
will require internet connection) |

Apply all "Important and
Recommended Updates" |
| |
| i. |
You may need to run Windows Update several times to get all
updates |
| ii. |
You may need to reboot the system several times to install all
updates |

Restore Windows XP data to Windows 7 via WET
| 1. |
Plug in external USB Hard drive to
System with Windows 7 |
| 2. |
Launch Windows Easy Transfer by
clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then
clicking Windows Easy Transfer |
| 3. |
At the "Welcome to Windows
Easy Transfer" screen, click Next |
| 4. |
At the "What do you want
to use to transfer" screen, select "External HDD" |
| 5. |
At the "Which computer are
you using now?" screen, select "...New Computer" |
| 6. |
At the "Has Windows Easy
Transfer already saved..." screen, select "Yes" |
| 7. |
Browse and Open the WET file you
created in the Capture Windows XP image step |
| 8. |
At the "Choose what to
transfer..." screen, click Transfer |
| 9. |
The transfer will now begin |
| 10. |
At the "Choose what to
transfer..." screen, select "See what transferred" |
| 11. |
Review Transfer report, looking
for errors, and then close the window |
| 12. |
At the "Choose what to
transfer..." screen, click Close |
| 13. |
Restart your computer to complete
the transfer process |
